United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)

Objectives
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the UNs global development network, advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. We are on the ground in 166 countries, working with them on their own solutions to global and national development challenges. As they develop local capacity, they draw on the people of UNDP and our wide range of partners.
UNDPs work
UNDP chairs the UN Development Group and helps developing countries attract and use aid effectively. It is mandate is to support countries in creating and sharing innovative solutions to the common challenges of:
- Democratic Governance
- Poverty Reduction
- Crises Prevention and Recovery
- Energy and Environment
In all its activities, UNDP mainstreams the protection of human rights and the empowerment of women.
UNDP Syria
UNDP has been operating in Syria since 1962, supporting the national efforts for achieving sustainable human development and reducing poverty. UNDP works with the State Planning Commission, as its primary counterpart, and partners with the different line ministries, public sector institutions, non-governmental organizations, private sector organizations, as well as donors. UNDP provides advice and technical backstopping on different issues to support national planning and policy-making to strengthen economic and social reforms. Capacity Development is an underlying principle of UNDPs support for achieving sustainable human development.
The Millennium Development Goals
The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are eight goals to be achieved by 2015 that respond to the world's main development challenges. The MDGs are drawn from the actions and targets contained in the Millennium Declaration that was adopted by 189 nations-and signed by 147 heads of state and governments during the UN Millennium Summit in September 2000.
The eight MDGs are the following:
- Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
- Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education
- Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women
- Goal 4: Reduce child mortality
- Goal 5: Improve maternal health
- Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
- Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability
- Goal 8: Develop a Global Partnership for Development
